Innovative Computing Laboratory - Academic Research in Enabling Technology and High Performance Computing

The Innovative Computing Laboratory (ICL) aspires to be a world leader in enabling technologies and software for scientific computing. Our vision is to provide high performance tools to tackle science’s most challenging problems and to play a major role in the development of standards for scientific computing in general.

ICL is part of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department in the College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee and serves as the cornerstone laboratory of the Center for Information Technology Research (CITR), one of UT's nine Centers of Excellence.

The MAGMA project aims to develop a dense linear algebra library similar to LAPACK but for heterogeneous/hybrid architectures, starting with current "Multicore+GPU" systems.

The MAGMA research is based on the idea that, to address the complex challenges of the emerging hybrid environments, optimal software solutions will themselves have to hybridize, combining the strengths of different algorithms within a single framework. Building on this idea, we aim to design linear algebra algorithms and frameworks for hybrid manycore and GPUs systems that can enable applications to fully exploit the power that each of the hybrid components offers.

MAGMA has recently released version 1.0 of clMAGMA, an OpenCL port of MAGMA, intended for a single GPU.
